Title - Railway station goes green with solar LED lights

LUDHIANA: Taking a step towards the use of eco-friendly energy, the authorities have installed solar light emitting diodes (LED) lamps at the Ludhiana railway station. The solar LED lights have been put up at three spots at the railway station back gate (towards Guru Nanak Stadium) near the police security post and at places at Railways Hospital just near the back gate.

Sources said the lights that were installed recently and have started working. They added that though a good move by the railway authorities, it should have been done long ago to save precious electricity and also to make use of eco-friendly source of energy.

RK Sharma, station superintendent, Ludhiana Railway Station, said, a??These lights have been installed on experimental basis. But more such lights will be installed. The purpose of installing these lights is that when there is a power cut these will continue to illuminate the station.a?? He added that solar power is clean source of energy.

Meanwhile, residents, who frequently visit the railway station to travel by train, appreciated the move of the railway authorities. Krishan Kumar, a businessman of Model Town, said, "I think many residents started using solar energy appliances about 4-5 years ago so the railway officials installing these lights now means they are late. Better late than never, if they have installed the solar lights now it is not bad either. I hope they install more such lights at the station."
