The super league of the 60th senior National kabaddi championship for men and women will commence at the Sir M. Visveshwaraiah stadium in Mandya from January 10, with the finals slated for January 13.The event is being jointly organised by Karnataka Rajya Amateur Kabaddi Association (KRAKA) and Mandya District Amateur Kabaddi Association.“The who is who of Indian kabaddi will be there with the AGM of the Amateur Kabaddi Federation of India (AKFI) also scheduled for January 11,” said P.M. Somashekar, the organising secretary of the championships at a press conference here on Monday.“Incidentally this year ex-MP and former Union minister Ambarish, who is also the chairman of the organising committee is celebrating his 60th birthday and so we have named the trophy ‘Ambi Cup’ after him,” he added.Four teams from each zone — 16 teams in the men’s section and 16 in the women’s — will be divided into two groups and will play on a league-cum-knock-out basis.The top four teams from each group will clash in the quarterfinals. Four floodlit courts will be in use each day with the matches scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. each day.When asked about Services and Indian Railways being fielded in the list of teams from South and East, respectively, Somashekar said: “we took it up with the AKVI too but apparently in rotation system this time Services will represent South and Indian Railways from East.”

The teams:

Men: North: Jammu & Kashmir, Haryana, Delhi, UP. South: Services, TN, Hyderabad, Karnataka. East: Indian Railways, Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha. West: Rajasthan, Maharashtra, BSNL, Vidarbha.

Women: North: Haryana, HP, UP, Delhi. South: Karnataka, TN, Pondicherry, AP. East: Indian Railways, Manipur, Odisha, Bihar. West: Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, Vidarbha, MP.
