A 18-year-old youth, who was standing on the platform and talking on his mobile phone, died on Friday after a train hit him at Sion station.

The deceased Karan Jethva, 18, was a first-year physiotherapy student of Lokmanya Tilak Municipal Medical College in Sion.

“The victim was standing on the edge of platform number three with his back facing the CST-Kalyan down fast train around 6.50 pm. CCTV footage of the platform showed that he was taking on his phone and was unaware of the speeding train,” said a officer from Dadar railway police station.

Jethva, a resident of Ghatkopar, was immediately rushed to the nearby Sion Hospital where he was declared dead on admission.

“The victim’s face was completely smashed because of the speeding train’s impact. He must have died on the spot due to head injuries and was brought dead to the hospital,” said Dr Suleman Merchant, dean, Sion Hospital.
