Title - Garbage problem in Patna worries elders

PATNA: The issue of garbage lifting and removing encroachment from various parts of the city dominated the question hour in legislative council on Wednesday.Members cutting across party lines demanded immediate removal of garbage littered all over the city. Members also requested urban development and housing minister Prem Kumar to take immediate measures for removal of encroachment on the main thoroughfares, including from Dak Bungalow crossing to GPO roundabout, for smooth vehicular traffic.Replying to a question of Mahachandra Prasad Singh (JD-U), urban development minister said he would ask the Patna DM today itself for the removal of encroachment between Dak Bungalow crossing to GPO roundabout via Patna Junction road.While interrupting minister's reply, Mahachandra said though the road on this stretch has been widened, the encroachment on pavements virtually brings the traffic to a standstill. Members also said the encroachment by street vendors have made it difficult for people to catch trains from Patna junction.

Kiran Ghai Sinha (BJP) also said that pathways on both sides of Beer Chand Patel Marg is also encroached by vendors. The pathways are meant for rickshaw-pullers and two-wheelers but are encroached by vendors, she said.

The minister said the government was in the process of making rules and regulations for the street vendors for the permanent solution to encroachment problem facing the city.

The minister, while replying to Mohd Haroon Rashid (JD-U), admitted that the garbage is piled up next to the traffic police station near Gandhi Maidan. He said all the seized vehicles dumped near the police station would soon be removed. "We have requested the home department to get the seized vehicles removed," he said. The minister also said regular cleaning would be done on that spot for the removal of garbage.

Leader of opposition in the upper house, Ghulam Gaus said the entire region, including the turning point near Kalidas Ranglaya, stinks.

The minister, while replying to a question of Neeraj Kumar (JD-U), said a sum of Rs23.09 crore has been sanctioned to Patna Municipal Corporation (PMC) for the solid waste management under the JNNURM scheme.

He said the PMC would initiate the process by purchasing necessary equipment for the removal of solid waste within three months.
