Mumbai: India's first superfast train, The Deccan Queen, completes 84 years on Saturday. And it calls for nothing less than a celebration. So, Mid-Day hopped on for one such ride to relive the train journey that has connected Mumbai and Pune for over eight decades now. The Deccan Queen waits majestically on platform no 8 at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus Station, her forehead decorated with a red symbol of the swastika and a tattoo that reads Shubh Labh wishing a blessed journey. The Deccan Queen Express is one of the most packed trains during the weekdays carrying hundreds of commuters from Pune to Mumbai; many of them working professionals who find place in the two bogies reserved for seasonal passengers. She is dressed in blue with amber yellow and red stripes running through her body, it feels like a long scarf gladly wrapped around her neck. Amidst a crowd of passengers hurrying through the busy corridors at CST, she stands out like a real queen. |
