South Western Railway (SWR) is set to eliminate open discharge toilets. It has already completed makeover of 70% coaches in its entire fleet. Around 400 trains are currently being operated by SWR out of which around 300 train's coaches are now bio-toilet equipped.

SWR official said, " 7,715 bio-toilets have been installed till April this year. We’ll install the remaining in a few months."

The section between Londa in Belagavi to Vasco da Gama in Goa has been declared a green corridor —free from human waste discharge from trains.

However, although bio-toilets helps to keep railway tracks clean and corrosion free, it has also posed a challenge of being unhygienic for passengers as most the toilets gets choked. Indian Railways is now shifting its focus on vacuum toilets.
