Title - Railways generated Rs 14,102.45-cr revenue from commodity-wise freight traffic during April-May

NEW DELHI: Indian Railways garnered the revenue of Rs 14,102.45 crore from commodity-wise freight traffic during April-May 2012 as compared to Rs 11,147.79 crore during the corresponding period last year, posting an increase of 25.64 per cent.

During April-May 2012, Railways carried 164.38 million tonnes of commodity-wise freight traffic as against 157.23 million tonnes carried during the comparable period last year, registering an increase of 4.55 per cent.

The Net Tonne Kilo Metres (NTKM) went up from 10,4237 million during April-May 2011 to 10,4951 million during April-May 2012, reporting an rise of 0.68 per cent.

Out of the total earnings of Rs 7,195.62 crore from commodity-wise freight traffic during the month of May 2012, Rs. 3194.66 crore contributed from transportation of 41.62 million tonnes of coal, followed by Rs 680.29 crore from 9.59 million tonnes of iron ore for exports, steel plants and for other domestic user, Rs 761.79 crore from 9.53 million tonnes of cement, Rs 474.82 crore from 3.33 million tonnes of foodgrains, Rs 403.51 crore from 3.48 million tonnes of petroleum oil and lubricant (POL), Rs 458.59 crore from 3.03 million tonnes of Pig iron and finished steel from steel plants and other points, Rs. 253.16 crore from 2.64 million tonnes of fertilizers, Rs. 117.99 crore from 1.26 million tonnes of raw material for steel plants except iron ore.
