Title - 2000 railway stations to get plastic bottle crushing machine

Plastic bottle crushing machines will be installed by Railways at 2000 stations across the nation.  According to a railway official, "At a time when plastics in general, and plastic bottles in particular, are being widely recognised as being extremely harmful for the environment, we are undertaking concrete steps to raise awareness to battle the plastic menace."

According to data, 6289 tonnes of plastic bottles waste is discarded on railway tracks. Installation of crushers will encourage passengers to use these machines specially when coupled with some form of coupon or cashback.

These machines will be installed at station's exit and at platforms. The inserted bottles will be crushed and disintegrated into fine pieces. The plastic pieces will later on be disposed of to plastic manufacturers. 

While smaller stations will be covered under corporate social responsibility spends, the rest of will be done through competitive bidding.
