Starting Thursday, there is someone watching/monitoring everyone’s movement anywhere at Chennai Central 24/7.

Taking security and passenger safety to the next level, Southern Railway (SR) on Thursday launched its first ever Integrated Security System (ISS) at Chennai Central and Egmore.

General manager of Southern Railway A. K. Mittal formally launched the Rs 41.6 crore ISS covering 14 stations at Central on Thursday morning.

The modern security system, which is aimed at plugging the loopholes in security at railway junctions laid threadbare after 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks, will also be installed at other major stations like Thiruvananthapuram central, Ernakulam junction, Madurai junction, Coimbatore junction, Kozhikode, Mangalore and the suburban stations like Chennai Beach, Mambalam, Tambaram, Basin Bridge and Tiruvallur.

The RDSO specified ISS will comprise sub-systems like CCTV surveillance system with IP based cameras numbering around 625, under-vehicle scanning system (UVSS) for entries and exits at nine major stations, 295 personal and X-ray baggage screening system besides explosive detection and disposal squad at all major stations. The sub-system will be integrated by networking and monitored at the centralised control rooms.

Existing CCTV network of suburban platforms (Moore Market Complex) has also been integrated to this system. Chennai Central alone will have 54 cameras under ISS.

The CCTV surveillance system has facility to record and play back, store video data for 30 days and video analytics like intrusion detection, left object detection and overcrowding that further increase security agencies efficiency in tracking movement of anti-social elements.

Also, the UVSS has facilities to monitor, capture and record under carriage images of vehicles in motion besides capturing the image of a vehicle’s driver and vehicle number plate recognition system.

The new ISS has been installed to crackdown on anti-social activities, whose presence affects passenger security and safety.
