Kochi: ‘Power-saving’ locomotives are being used for the first time in the state. Two micro-processor controlled locos with regenerator braking system are being used in trains like Chandigarh-Kochuveli Sampark Kranti which started service in the state two weeks ago.“This is the first time that such engines are being used in trains running services in the state. Each time the brakes are applied, power gets generated. The loco has six axles, each one with a motor. While applying brakes, the motor will turn into a generator”, said a senior railway official of the Thiruvananthapuram division. The unique feature of the WAP-7 series engine is that it eliminates the need to have separate generator sets for air-conditioning in long-distance trains, thus saving on maintenance and running costs.“The loco transfers electric power from its pantograph to the coaches under the Head on Generation system.“The advantage is for long distance trains as the power generated would be transferred for the uninterrupted supply of AC and other passenger amenities”, the official said. The high speed electric locomotive can haul trains at speeds ranging from 140 to 160 km per hour and it can accelerate a 24-coach passenger rake to 110 km per hour in 240 seconds. |
