The Hyderabad Metro Rail will be the first in the country to run with fully automated Communication- based Train Control System (CBTCS), a more efficient railway signalling technology that will improve passenger safety and frequency of trains, L&T Metro Rail Hyderabad Limited (LTMRHL) chief executive and managing director VB Gadgil has said.

Speaking at a media conference along with Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited (HMRL) MD NVS Reddy here on Friday, Gadgil said the LTMRHL is committed to complete all the three metro rail corridors by July 2017.

He said that it has a low operating, energy and maintenance costs.

“As part of the technology, trains will be controlled from a Central Control Room, relieving the drivers from being completely dependant on track signals. Information regarding track clearance and the permitted speed will be provided to drivers in regular intervals,” he said.

The technology will improve passengers’ safety as automatic brakes can be applied to the train in case the driver commits a mistake. Gadgil said The completion of the first stage of the project is expected by 2014.
