Title - Almost 9 lakh senior citizens gave up train ticket subsidy in 3 months

Under the 'give up' scheme started by Indian Railways over 9 lakh senior citizen choose not to avail their subsidies on train tickets. This has helped Railways to save almost 40 crore rupees last year. Railway launched the scheme by providing an option to senior citizens to avail the full concession while booking a train ticket or forgo the entire amount.

Later this year railway added another option that allows a senior citizen to give up 50% of the subsidy. Subsidy to senior citizens burden Railways to nearly about rupees 1300 crore. Number suggests that between July 22 to October 22 - 2.16 lakh men give up their full subsidy and 2.67 lakh women followed the same. Numbers also suggest that the option of availing 50% subsidy was also availed by 2.5 lakh men and 2.05 women. According to Railway, number of people availing subsidies is doubled in 1 year. As of now railway subsidise passenger fares and bear a burden of almost rupees 1600 crore.
