PUNE: Pune railway station is among the seven stations within the Central Railway division, where the Railway Board will keep a hawk's eye on matters of cleanliness of the station premises.
Apparently, the Board wants the authorities to ensure highest standard of cleanliness at these stations.
Railway officials said the Board has selected few stations from each of its 17 zones, where it will monitor the level of cleanliness. “The other six stations include Lokmanya Tilak Terminus, Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus, Dadar, Nagpur, Kalyan and Nashik,” railway officials said, adding the stations have been selected based on the flow of passengers.
The Pune Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) Vishal Agarwal told Sakal Times that funds would not be a constraint to maintain a high level of cleanliness at the Pune station. “We are in the process of appointing a new contractor for the upkeep of the station. The contract of the present contractor would not be renewed for his poor work,” added Agarwal.
At present of the six platforms at the Pune station, the Medical Department and the contractor maintains three platforms, each. “We are going to change this system and entrust a private party to maintain the cleanliness of all the six platforms to avoid any kind of confusion,” said Agarwal.
Interestingly, the Pune Railway Division was pulled up by the Central Railway, last year, following complaints from commuters about the unhygienic conditions prevailing at the station. The Central Railway authorities had asked the Pune division to take immediate steps to clean the station properly.
