Title - Shuttle trains to reduce traffic between Jolarpet and Chennai Port

Southern Railway and Chennai Port Trust is working on idea to  slash container truck traffic in the area by upto 15%. Once finalized, officials will allow trucks till Jolarpet section; where cargo unloading will be done. Thereafter to transport containers from that point to port shuttle freight trains will be used.

This will help truckers to a great extent by cutting out waiting hours which is currently now upto 15 hours on an average. Besides this, it will also improve road safety and reduce vehicular emission. 

A proposal regarding the concept has been put up by the Southern Railway authorities to officials of Port Trust. Around 1,700 trucks enter Chennai Port every day. After commencement of shuttle services at least 300 less trucks will enter thereby reducing significant load.

Coffee, textiles and machinery are among the main exports from the port; major imports include auto products and chemicals.
