MUMBAI: A long-distance train commuter, who handed over a Rs 100 note to two eunuchs who were harassing him and asked them to return Rs 90, was assaulted by them on Wednesday. The two fled but were nabbed the government railway police (GRP) after they left behind a cellphone. The victim, Mohammad Kitabullah Umar (36), who resides in Kurla west, was on his way to Bihar in the Rajendra Nagar-Patna Express from LTT. Around 10.15pm, the train was at Vidyavihar and slowed down to change tracks at a junction point. Two eunuchs entered the compartment and started pestering Umar for money. Initially, he refused but when the eunuchs began manhandling him, he coughed up the amount. Umar handed the two Rs 100 and told them to return the change. The accused, Rahul Ghosh alias Khushboo (19) and Laikahmed Siddiqui alias Saira (22), took umbrage at the suggestion. They assaulted him on the head with a stone and a razor blade and Umar sustained serious injuries. Ghosh and Siddiqui jumped off the train with the money they extorted from Umar as the train slowed down.

"A cellphone left behind by the accused was found in the compartment. It had photographs of the two and some phone numbers of their acquaintances," said Shivaji Dhumal, senior inspector of Kurla GRP. "We went through the phone's call log and questioned people who were in touch with Ghosh and Siddiqui. They were arrested within 12 hours," he added. GRP officials are planning a special drive on Central Railway after receiving complaints of mugging.
