The district unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has requested the railways to provide basic amenities at the Salem Town Railway Junction. In a letter to the Salem Railway Divisional Manager Sujatha Jayaraj, party district general secretary R.P. Gopinath said that thousands of passengers use the junction every day.But the junction lacks toilet facility and drinking water facility and passengers are put to hardship. The letter said that the junction was turning into a ground for anti-social elements and the party had highlighted this issue earlier.Presence of TASMAC outlet opposite to the junction is posing threat to the passengers, especially women. The DRM had inspected the junction last month. But no security personnel or basic amenities were provided.Hence the railways should open the already-constructed toilets for the convenience of the passengers, he said.

He also urged the railways to provide additional compartments on the Salem – Virudhachalam passenger train and vice versa for the benefit of the passengers.

Over 1,000 passengers board the train at the junction every day, but were forced to stand due to inadequate seating capacity. Hence additional compartments should be provided, he urged.

The letter also urged the railways to open a separate counter for issue of platform tickets as passengers have to wait in long queues to get both the train tickets and platform tickets in the existing counter.
