Title - Western Railway guard complains of being manhandled by two 'cops' at Mira Road

MUMBAI: A 44-year-old guard with the Western Railway has complained to senior officers of being manhandled by two persons, including a woman railway cop, at Mira Road station. The guard was asking a few male passengers to alight from the luggage compartment of a local around 11.15 am on January 10. At that point, two persons claiming to be railway cops arrived and began demanding fines from the male passengers. The guard asked the two 'cops' to produce their identity-cards or state their buckle number, as they weren't dressed in their uniforms. While the guard was walking back, the duo followed him and manhandled him inside his cabin for interfering in their work.

"The woman identified herself but her associate wouldn't and I'm convinced he wasn't a cop at all. I informed the station master at Mira Road but couldn't linger on as the train had to leave on its scheduled time. Later, I also complained to the senior supervisor at Mumbai Central," the guard said.

Western Railway public relations officer Nitin David said that the department has taken serious cognizance of the guard's complaint. "We will be writing to the Government Railway Police (GRP) outpost concerned and direct them to take suitable action. There was no provocation and the assault on the guard was uncalled for,'' David said.
