Title - Western Railway earns over Rs 9 crore in fines

MUMBAI: Western Railway earned Rs 9.13 crore in fine and penalty from various offenders, including those traveling with ticket, in November this year.

Western Railway's chief public relations officer, Sharat Chandrayan said, "A total of 2,21,518 cases of ticketless/irregular travel including unbooked luggage cases were detected."

The recovery of Rs. 9.13 Crore is 85.17% more than the same period last year.

He further said that around 1540 cases of illegal transfer of reserved tickets were detected and an amount of Rs 11.50 lakh was realized.

Chandrayan said, "During November 2012, 1,151 beggars and unauthorized hawkers were apprehended. They were evicted, prosecuted and fined. 8 persons were sent to jail."

In the same period 170 checks were conducted against touts and other anti-social elements. As a result, 240 persons were apprehended and were prosecuted under various sections of Railways Act. Of these, 218 were fined while 19 were sent to jail.

Moreover, as many as 761 beggars were detected and removed from railway premises by Surakshini Squad during this period .

During October, 2012, a total of 1,64,337 cases of ticketless/irregular travel including unbooked luggage cases were detected resulting into a recovery of Rs. 5.84 crore.

In the same period, 469 cases of illegal transfer of reserved tickets were detected and an amount of Rs.3.57 was realized.
