Southern Railway registered a thrilling 3-2 win over Indian Bank in the St. Joseph’s-CFA senior division league here on Saturday. The Railwaymen are in joint lead with Arrows on 17 points and will meet Tamil Nadu Police in their final league match. However, Arrows still has two games left to play.Indian Bank has 16 points and will finish its campaign against defending champion Customs. The defeat on Saturday would hurt the Bank side more since it began the match well and took the lead in the 15th minute after some lax defending by Southern Railway allowed S. Karthik to sneak through and finish from close range. That goal was immediately followed by a gilt-edged opportunity for Railway as Riju and Elamurugan failed to apply the finishing touches to Sirajuddeen’s probing diagonal ball into the six-yard box.Later in the half, Indian Bank’s R. Karthik was guilty of missing a simpler chance when he shot straight at the ’keeper from three yards. His team was left to rue that miss as Rajesh and Riju scored within four minutes to give the Railway side a 2-1 lead at half-time.The lead was extended 12 minutes into the second period by Elamurugan, but the Bank team responded with a goal in the very next minute through a header by Edwin Sydney.

In the day’s other match, ICF edged past AGORC with a solitary goal to reach 16 points with two games remaining.

The results: Southern Railway 3 (Rajesh 41, Riju 44, Elamurugan 57) bt Indian Bank 2 (S. Karthik 15, Edwin Sydney 58); ICF 1 (Raj Kumar 41) bt AGORC 0. — Sports Reporter
