Title - The Hindu : Cities / Delhi : Ladies-only bus service launched

Ladies’ Special buses with women conductors have been launched by the Delhi Transport Corporation from 11 points across Delhi to cater to the needs of women passengers during the office rush hour. The service was flagged off by Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit from the Delhi Secretariat on Friday.

Ms. Dikshit said the special buses for women will provide them a safe and comfortable journey. She declared that the number of buses under this service would be enhanced in accordance with the requirement of commuters in due course of time and hoped that this service would post good ridership.

WOMEN CONDUCTORS

Delhi Transport Minister Ramakant Goswami said barring the drivers, who at the moment at men, these buses would only carry women. “As such, we have also deployed women conductors in them.” The Minister said these buses would seek to serve women passengers during the office rush hour and that is why, to begin with, their services are being operated to and fro 11 important commercial centres across the Capital.

In the morning these buses would operate from Uttam Nagar Terminal to Nehru Place Terminal; Uttam Nagar Terminal to Sarai Kale Khan ISBT; Dwarka More Metro Station to Nehru Place Terminal; Inder Puri to Delhi Secretariat; Rohini Sector 22 to Connaught Place; Ambedkar Nagar Terminal to Rajendra Place; Shahdara to R.K. Puram; Madhu Vihar Dwarka to CGO Complex; Kapashera Border to Mori Gate Terminal; Nangloi Syed to Delhi Secretariat; and Mehrauli to Old Delhi Railway Station. In the evening, these buses would take the return journey between these two points.

MORE ROUTES LATER

Mr. Goswami said as of now only non air-conditioned buses have been introduced on these routes but depending on public demand the Delhi Government would consider starting air-conditioned services. “We would also add more routes to the Ladies Special service if the response is encouraging,” he said.
