Chandigarh: Five passengers on board the Nangal-Ambala daily passenger train sustained injuries when the stranded train was being pulled by a relief engine near the Hallo Majra railway overbridge this evening. The victims were sitting on the stairs of the bogies when they fell from the train due to a sudden jolt.The injured, Sham Sundar, Shiv Kumar and Gaurav Nath, who sustained minor head and knee injuries, were rushed to the GMCH, Sector 32. They were later discharged. Due to the noise generated during the buffering (the process to attach the additional engine to the stationary train), people in large numbers gathered at the spot.On learning about the mishap, Deputy Commissioner Mohammed Shyain and SDM (South) Parshuram V Kavle also reached the spot.Ripul, an eyewitness, said he along with other passengers was waiting for the train when they heard the noise. A majority of the passengers thought that the train had derailed and a few of them jumped off to save their lives.The accident took place at 7 pm. Many passengers alighted from the train and went in search of some alternative mode of transportation.Officials of the UT Administration, who were present on the spot, refused to speak to the media.Railway station superintendent Parveen Kumar said the authorities were getting the engine repaired.Meanwhile, Sanjeev Kohli from the Disaster Management Cell of the Chandigarh Administration said they were told that a fatal mishap had occurred.Ram Bhawan, who along with his family, was to go to Ambala to attend a wedding, put off his travel plan after he did not get any drop facility at the railway station. He lamented that for the past two hours, he had been waiting for the train. He added that as he could not reach Ambala on time, he decided to go back to Mohali.Surinder Singh from Nangal said he wanted to go to Ambala but did not know how to get there.

Minister informed
Even though Union Railway Minister Pawan Kumar Bansal was not in the city, his party representatives visited the spot and informed him about the accident.

Passengers at the mercy of fire officials

As neither the Railways nor the UT Administration made any drop arrangements for the passengers, the fire officials helped a few families who were on foot in getting an alternative mode of transportation.
