Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has opposed the hike in the rail passenger fares.  Reacting to the rail fare hike, Naveen told mediapersons that this would affect all sections people. “Besides, I do not understand why the fare has been revised when the railway budget is to be placed shortly,” he said.

The youth wing of the BJD threatened to demonstrate at all the railway stations in the State unless the hike in the rail fare was withdrawn. Describing this as an anti-people decision of the Centre, Biju Yuva Janata Dal (BYJD) president Sanjay Dasburma said it would be an added burden on the common people who are already dealing with steep hike in the prices of essential commodities.

Strongly opposing the all-round hike in rail fares, secretary of the state unit CPM Janardan Pati said the hike in fares of second class, sleeper and suburban fares is particularly unjustified as they burden the ordinary people. Criticising the hike, state secretary of CPI Dibakar Nayak has also demanded its immediate withdrawal.
