Title - Littering in railways, think again
Posted by : railenquiry on Dec 17, 2012 - 20:00:03 PM

If you are one of those who throw the disposable cup or empty packet of chips simply anywhere on the railway station or in the train, get ready to pay a fine.

After failing to generate public awareness on keeping the railways clean, finally a stricter decision was taken – that of penalizing the offenders. Anyone found committing the following acts on railway premises including station buildings, platforms, rail tracks and trains, are liable to be fined

Throwing garbage
Urinating
Washing utensils / clothes
Defecating
Feeding animals / birds
Putting up posters
Writing on walls

The vendors and hawkers who are selling eatables, magazines or anything in the railway premises will have to make arrangements to ensure their customers can properly dispose the garbage. Any officer from and above the rank of Ticket Collector, including the station master, station manager shall be keeping a check on passengers. They may directly levy the fine on any offender when caught.

Will implementation of fine on littering be of any help?

Not exactly, though it might be so if implemented properly. But even then, the condition of railway platforms and premises is deplorable.

Consider this, over 13 million people use the Indian Railways everyday. At any given time, there are thousands of people on the railway station (for major railway stations). There is always a huge unmanageable rush. The waiting rooms are full and brimming. Most of the people d not get a proper place to sit while waiting, the toilets are in unimaginable condition where even animals cannot use. There are no proper garbage bins in sight, only peek dan  are everywhere, and even then the highly intelligent pan and jarda lovers spit right on the floor, where you and many others have to keep their bags and luggage.

If proper waste bins are provided and clean toilets are there, there are high chances that people will start using them and automatically things will get better.
