SRINAGAR: Heavy snowfall in the hills and moderate in the plains of Kashmir valley has plunged majority of the Kashmir in darkness while Jammu-Srinagar National Highway is closed with freak weather disrupting air traffic.

The authorities said here that Ski rest of Gulmarg had fresh snowfall of 3 feet, Tangmarg 2 feet and Jawarhar Tunnel recorded 1.6 feet of fresh snow while Srinagar and plains of the Kashmir valley experienced seasons first snowfall today.

The snow depth at the other places is Srinagar 2-3 inches, Budgam 4 inches, Charar e Sharief one feet, Phakherpora 2.5 inches, Chadoora 4 to 5 inches, Beerwa 10 inches, Ganderbal 3 to 4 inches, Gund 12 inches, Sonmarg 20 inches, Kangan 8 inches, Pahalgam 10 inches, Anantnag 3 inches, Awantipora 3 inches, Shopina 12 inches, Herpora 30 inches, Kellar 24 inches, Zainpora 6 to 7 inches, Pulwama 6 inches, Rajpora 11 inches, Lassipora 8 to 9 inches, DH pora 15 inches, Kund 12 inches, Baramulla 9 inches, Baba reshi 36 inches, Pattan 10 inches, Chandoosa 24 inches, Uri 12 inches, Sopore 6 inches, Panzila 18 inches, Dangiwacha 8 inches, Handwara 4 inches, Vilgam 6 inches, Zachildara 6 inches, Bandipora 6 inches, Sumbal 4 inches, Pethkote 8 inches, Gurez 12 inches, Tuleil 24 inches, Izmarg 12 inches, Kupwara 6 inches, Karna 18 inches.

Authorities said that Mechanical Engineering Department started road clearance during last night.

The snow has disrupted power supply to the majority of the areas in Kashmir valley due to snapping of power lines at many places.

The Jammu-Srinagar national Highway was closed last evening after snowfall. Forty light vehicles and three busses carrying passengers that were stopped in Banihal after heavy snowfall forced the closure of the National Highway last evening are still stranded there due to heavy snowfall.

The Director Meteorological Department Sonam Lotus told Excelsior that weather will start improving across State by evening today.
