Title - CCTV cameras sought on platforms

The Kannur Merchants’ Welfare Association (KMWA) has called upon rail authorities to install closed circuit TV cameras on all platforms in the Kannur railway station to ensure the safety of passengers.The KMWA, in a memorandum to the general manager of the Southern Railway, stated that the recent incidents of violence at the station, including a murder on January 19 and stabbing incidents near the reservation counter a few months back, had created a sense of insecurity among the passengers.

Complaints:The memorandum signed by KMWA president Vasudev Pai and general secretary C. Adinan said the waiting room at the railway station was being used by anti-social elements during night.The memorandum urged the authorities to increase the number of security personnel on the three platforms considering the situation.It also called for strengthening police patrolling at the station. Installation of CCTV cameras could help the railway security personnel to identify criminals reaching the station.

e-tokens:The foot-overbridge to the left of the main platform should be either widened or an escalator installed in view of the increasing number of passengers, the memorandum said. It also added that electronic tokens be introduced at the reservation counter.
