The Central Railway Station is one of the busiest venues in the city which thousands of people visit on a daily basis.Considering the number of visitors to the railway station, the Southern Railway has done little to improve its aesthetic quality .H. Anwar Basha, a resident of Kilpauk, said that thousands of commuters arrived at the railway station from various parts of the country and it was necessary that the Southern Railway should take some steps to show it in a better light by creating some greenery at the complex.Let alone developing one, the Southern Railway’s inability to maintain even a small park, developed through a sponsor, was disheartening, he complained.A few years ago, the railway station came alive with neon-lit ‘fibre’ coconut trees and two fountains spraying water in the small park. The elegantly sculpted fountain once gushed with water, and spread cheer with lights glittering in the background. The park that was once covered with a green top of grass is in a sorry state now, as it is dumped with waste. Also, the two fountains have stopped functioning due to poor maintenance. The two fountains were developed at a cost of Rs. one lakh each and one of them was installed by a sponsor. At present, the parched park has become a dumping ground. |
