Southern Railway has clarified that Bhagavathy, the gatekeeper at a railway crossing in Ganapathy, was not inebriated. In a release, the Railway says that two members of the public, in an inebriated condition, entered into an argument with Mr. Bhagavathy on Saturday, when the Myladuthurai Janshatabdi was approaching the level crossing. As he was involved in the brawl, he could not close the gates. This led the Loco Pilot to stop the vehicle, get off the train and reach the gatekeeper’s cabin to ascertain the problem. The Loco Pilot then alerted the officials about the problem. The release says that because of the brawl with the two drunk members of the public, Bhagavathy could not close the gate. He was sober, alert and not drunk.However, since the two members of the public were drunk and targeting Bhagavathy, he was asked to leave the gatekeeper’s cabin. The Railway administration posted another gatekeeper . An assistant scale officer is inquiring into the incident, as per the orders of the Salem Railway Division administration. Thus far no action has been initiated against the gatekeeper. Any further action will depend on report.
