All that is necessary for the triumph of evil, is that good men do nothing" . Irish political thinker Edmund Burke's words might ring true for many a common man but not 29-year-old Mumbai citizen Dipesh Tank. An advertising professional, Tank has been trying to make commuting on trains safer for women.Called the lifeline of Mumbai, local trains ferry over 72 lakh commuters across the length of the city daily, and have historically facilitated the participation of women in the workforce. But like most public spaces, trains and railway platforms too have been sullied by the increasing violence against women . In recent months, an American national was mugged, her face slashed in a running train. In another instance, a man attempted to rape a nurse who was alone in the ladies compartment.Such incidents are no longer rare in a city that took pride in its relatively safe public transport. Women commuters are often subjected to casual groping on crowded platforms , ogling and lewd comments. |

puneetmafia | No Metro from Sept, rues CM on : September 01, 2013 - 08:00:03 AM |
Going back on his promise given in the Legislative Assembly that the first Metro would run from September this year, Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan admitted on Friday that the Metro had failed to meet the deadline. He also admitted that till the Navi Mumbai Airport project gets the environment and wildlife clearance, the uncertainty will continue over the project. The first phase of the Mumbai Metro project which will connect Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar, is being constructed by MMRDA and Reliance Infrastructure under public-private participation mode.“The first phase of Metro to commence by September this year and the entire phase will be operational by the year end, Chavan had also said in May. But now CM has indirectly blamed the Central government for the delay and washed his hand off from responsibility. He also said that Mumbai Trans-Harbour Link (MTHL) project will now be actually completed by MMRDA. It is to be noted that despite floating global tenders for this project, no company showed interest in this project. This was a major embarrassment for Chavan and his government. |
