PATNA: At least 35 pilgrims were killed and over a dozen injured on Monday when they were run over by a speeding train in Bihar's Khagaria district. Angry locals and pilgrims set ablaze six coaches of the train, brutally assaulted its driver and took several railway officials hostage.Additional director general of police SK Bhardwaj confirmed the death of 35 Hindu pilgrims (Kanwariyas) when the Rajya Rani Express train mowed them down while they were trying to cross rail tracks at the Dhamara railway station on Saharsa-Mansi route of the East Central Railway (ECR).The death toll may increase because detailed information is yet to come from the accident site, he said.The train was travelling from Saharsa to Patna when the accident took place between 8am and 8.30am. The express train does not have a scheduled stop at Dhamara station."The accident took place when pilgrims were trying to cross the railway track after alighting from a local train," he said.Soon after the incident, angry pilgrims and locals set ablaze six coaches, including one AC coach, of the train and attacked railway officials."Some angry people attacked the train driver and seriously injured him. They beat him up mercilessly. Besides, some railway officials have been held hostage by them," a police official said.Bhardwaj said top officials of the district administration have been asked to rush to the accident site. |

धमहरा रेल हादसा के बाद स्वास्थ्य महकमे द्वारा तत्क्षण व्यवस्था अपटूडेट कर ली गई थी। सदर अस्पताल में महिला वार्ड को सूचना मिलते ही खाली करा दिया गया था। वहीं ओटी रूप में आठ बेड लगाया। सिविल सर्जन डा. सुरेश प्रसाद ने बताया कि पांच एम्बुलेंस घटना स्थल पर भेजा गया था। ताकि जख्मी को तत्क्षण उपचार के लिए समय पर सदर अस्पताल लाया जा सके। गंभीर रूप से जख्मी को बेहतर उपचार के लिए बेगूसराय व पटना भेजा गया। अस्पताल अधीक्षक ने बताया कि भंडार में काफी मात्रा में जीवनरक्षक दवा की व्यवस्था कर ली गई थी। जबकि महिला वार्ड सहित दो वार्ड को विशेष जख्मी के लिए रखा गया था। जख्मी के उपचार में चिकित्सक के अलावा सारे स्वास्थ्य कर्मियों लगे हुए थे। दूसरी ओर, सिविल सर्जन डा. सुरेश प्रसाद, डा. किशोर रमण के नेतृत्व में एक मेडिकल टीम घटना स्थल पर पहुंची जिसने वहां पोस्टमार्टम किया। |

Chandigarh: Chaos became the order of the day at the Chandigarh railway station as more than 8,000 candidates appeared for the Railway Recruitment Board exam today.Candidates turned up in large numbers to take the PGIMER's entrance exam for paramedical courses.A special Chandigarh-Ambala introduced to tackle the rush failed to serve the purpose as the situation went out of control when the train was about to depart at 3.30 pm.The counters were flooded with candidates. Passengers had it the toughest. Things went from bad to worse when staff at the counter took a break.Senior citizens and women had a tough time buying the tickets. Some were even pushed by the candidates.Ditto was the situation on the platforms as the students were in haste to board the train that was scheduled to leave at 3.35 pm."Thousands of aspirants come to the city to take one or the other exam on Sundays. It becomes difficult for the elderly and women to travel by trains on these days. Sometimes, the staff at the ticket counters do not give us tickets on time and we are made to wait for hours," said 75-year-old Sada Ram. |

NEW DELHI: Against the backdrop of changed political equations in Bihar, BJP on Monday joined RJD and LJP in slamming the Nitish Kumar government over lack of relief and rescue measures after a rail accident in Khagaria claimed several lives.As soon as the Rajya Sabha met for Zero Hour, Ram Vilas Paswan (LJP) and Ram Kripal Yadav (RJD) were on their feet saying, "Thirty people were killed by Rajyarani Express from Saharasa at Dhamara Ghat this morning but no rescue and relief measure has been initiated after 10 hours of the mishap by the Nitish government which claims good governance."Both the leaders were soon joined by BJP members who stood on their feet, holding Bihar government responsible for the accident.Responding to members' concern, Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Rajeev Shukla said, "The House is saddened over the accident. Minister of Railways is being contacted to apprise the House at the earliest of the steps taken so far."Earlier, Deputy Chairman P J Kurien said, "government should come out with statement."Paswan said despite claims of good infrastructure, the condition of roads was such that no relief measures could reach the spot, for which he held the state government solely responsible.Yadav joined him blaming the Nitish government for "anarchy" there saying the railway station has been set ablaze and situation was serious. |
