Chandigarh: Chaos became the order of the day at the Chandigarh railway station as more than 8,000 candidates appeared for the Railway Recruitment Board exam today.Candidates turned up in large numbers to take the PGIMER's entrance exam for paramedical courses.A special Chandigarh-Ambala introduced to tackle the rush failed to serve the purpose as the situation went out of control when the train was about to depart at 3.30 pm.The counters were flooded with candidates. Passengers had it the toughest. Things went from bad to worse when staff at the counter took a break.Senior citizens and women had a tough time buying the tickets. Some were even pushed by the candidates.Ditto was the situation on the platforms as the students were in haste to board the train that was scheduled to leave at 3.35 pm."Thousands of aspirants come to the city to take one or the other exam on Sundays. It becomes difficult for the elderly and women to travel by trains on these days. Sometimes, the staff at the ticket counters do not give us tickets on time and we are made to wait for hours," said 75-year-old Sada Ram. |

LUCKNOW: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister AkhileshYadav today exuded confidence that the ambitious Lucknow Metro Rail project, to ease traffic and transportation problem of the state capital, would start in time.On the occasion of the release of 'Development Agenda of UP 2013-2014', the chief minister said, "After the Lucknow project, which is a priority of the state government, projects for other cities would be taken up." Yadav, who was presented the model of the proposed project, also said the funds for the extension of metro in Ghaziabad has been arranged.Principal Secretary of the Housing and Urban Planning department Sadakant said details of the project were being worked out diligently so that the first phase of the Rs 6,757 crore project could be started by the targeted date of December, 2013.All efforts are being made to obtain necessary approvals and financial sanction from the Centre, he said, adding that operations are expected to commence in December, 2016.A modified Detailed Project Report (DPR) had been approved by the high-powered committee headed by the Chief Secretary, Sadakant said.The constitution of the Lucknow Metro Rail Corporation (LMRC) is underway with the memorandum and articles of the association having been prepared, he said.To expedite the work, an interim consultant is required to prepare detailed designs for which two specialist agencies -- RITES and DMRC -- have been asked to submit proposals, the Principal Secretary said, adding that the interim consultant would be selected by the end of this month. |

Expressing profound grief over the loss of innocent lives in a railway accident in Bihar, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) chief Lalu Prasad Yadav on Monday asked the Indian Railways to provide a compensation of Rs. 10 lakh and jobs to families who had lost their loved ones.Yadav said over 30 people have lost their lives in this tragedy, and added that the death toll is expected to rise.“It’s sad and heart-rendering news. Approximately, 30 people have died, the death toll may rise,” Yadav told media here.“We demand that the Railways give Rs10 lakh compensation and jobs to members of families of victims,” he added.At least 35 people were crushed to death under the wheels of Saharsa-Patna Rajya Rani Express at Dhamahra Ghat Railway Station near Saharsa this morning. The death toll is expected to rise.The victims mostly pilgrims were standing on the railway tracks at a station in Katyani Sthan, a religious stopover, waiting to board another train when the train hit them. |

PATNA: At least 35 pilgrims were killed and over a dozen injured on Monday when they were run over by a speeding train in Bihar's Khagaria district. Angry locals and pilgrims set ablaze six coaches of the train, brutally assaulted its driver and took several railway officials hostage.Additional director general of police SK Bhardwaj confirmed the death of 35 Hindu pilgrims (Kanwariyas) when the Rajya Rani Express train mowed them down while they were trying to cross rail tracks at the Dhamara railway station on Saharsa-Mansi route of the East Central Railway (ECR).The death toll may increase because detailed information is yet to come from the accident site, he said.The train was travelling from Saharsa to Patna when the accident took place between 8am and 8.30am. The express train does not have a scheduled stop at Dhamara station."The accident took place when pilgrims were trying to cross the railway track after alighting from a local train," he said.Soon after the incident, angry pilgrims and locals set ablaze six coaches, including one AC coach, of the train and attacked railway officials."Some angry people attacked the train driver and seriously injured him. They beat him up mercilessly. Besides, some railway officials have been held hostage by them," a police official said.Bhardwaj said top officials of the district administration have been asked to rush to the accident site. |

MYSORE: Commuters travelling between Mysore and Bangalore take note. Train services between Mysore and Bangalore will be affected on Tuesday, which will add pressure on KSRTC buses travelling between the two cities. The South Western Railway is taking up engineering works on Bangalore-Mysore broad gauge section on Tuesday. Owing to it, services of six trains traveling between the two cities is cancelled. The engineering works is being taken up for 24 hours between Maddur and Mandya section of the line starting from 5 am forcing the authorities to cut down the services. Some of the trains are partially cancelled while services of two are withdrawn, Mysore senior divisional commercial manager K Anil Kumar said on Monday. Sources told TOI the work is part of doubling of line between Mysore and Bangalore. The outbound traffic is 20,000. Of the 19 trains that were to operate on Tuesday, 11 will be in service, which will affect for the commuters, they stated. A majority of the travelers are office goers, who commute daily to semi-urban areas in Mandya and Ramnagaram districts. The inbound traffic is a little less than 20,000, the sources explained. |

Railway Minister Mallikarjun Kharge today announced an ex-gratia payment of Rs 5 lakh to the next of kin of those killed in the train mishap in Bihar's Khagaria district and ordered an inquiry into it.In a statement in the Rajya Sabha, Kharge said he has spoken to Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on steps to maintain law and order to facilitate normal train operations."On humanitarian grounds an ex-gratia amount of Rs 5 lakh for those who lost their lives and Rs 1 lakh for those grievously injured has been announced," he said.Responding to members' demands for Rs 10 lakh compensation to the families of the deceased, Kharge said the money being paid was in line with compensation given in recent times.A speeding express train ran over devotees waiting on tracks to stop it, leaving many persons dead and triggering angry protests by locals who attacked the train driver and set afire its coach besides engine of another train at Dhamara Ghat Station in Khagaria district. |
