A remote video enquiry kiosk was inaugurated at Guntur Railway Station by Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) N.K. Prasad on Wednesday. It enables passengers arriving at the station from Arundelpet side to interact with the on-duty enquiry clerk at east terminal through a push button on the kiosk set up alongside the booking counters at west terminal at a cost of Rs. 2 lakh.The kiosk, which facilitates audio-visual interaction, was set up by Signals and Telecommunications (S&T) Department.It comprises Internet Protocol (IP)-based digital cameras and phones aided by a dedicated optical fibre network. |

GUWAHATI: Putting pressure on the Centre to fix the dates for dialogues as early as possible, ethnic groups seeking separate states on Wednesday announced fresh agitation programmes like rail roko and road blockade that threaten to cut off the entire northeastern region from the rest of the country from August 16.While National Democratic Front of Boroland (Progressive), with the support of the All Bodo Students' Union (Absu), has called a 100-hour national highway blockade from August 16, the All Koch-Rajbongshi Students' Union (AKRSU), which is leading the demand for separate state of Kamatapur, has called a 12-hour rail blockade the same day.AKRSU has given its next call for another 12-hour national and state highway blockade on August 18.After them, All Bodo Students' Union (ABSU), which is spearheading the demand for Bodoland, has called a 24-hour national highway blockade on August 28 and 24-hour rail blockade on September 10. The Karbi-Dimasa group has so far not made any announcement. |

CHENNAI: Southern Railway on Thursday opened a round-the clock free medical centre at the Egmore railway station in association with SRM Institute of Medical Sciences. There will be three doctors and three nurses to attend the patients at the medical centre. It will have a stock of all essential and emergency medicines, and an ambulance service will also be available. It will serve as an information centre disseminating information on all the hospitals in the city to patients who arrive in the city for medical treatment. The centre will educate the public on seasonal ailments and epidemics. Frequent medical camps will be organised to provide the public with tips and guidelines to lead a healthy life. The medical centre was inaugurated by Dr Vadivel Mugunuthan, chairman of St John Ambulance, Tamil Nadu. Dr Alex Kuruvilla, CEO of SRM Institute of Medical Sciences, said the medical centre at Chennai Central had treated 1300 patients since April 2013. As many as 56 patients were critical and moved to hospitals after administering first aid to them, he added. |
