Longer long-distance trains that allowed Central Railway (CR) to accommodate more passengers have added to its profits. CR has raked in handsome earnings due to some innovative planning and astute management in the running of longdistance trains to various parts of India. Since August, it has been able to earn Rs 38 crore due to augmentation of trains and introduction of special long-distance trains.
    Sunil Joshi, coaching inspector, Central Railway, said, “Between April and August this year, CR was able to introduce 708 special trains from various destinations. This has helped us fetch Rs 28 crore in additional income. We also increased capacity on various corridors, where the existing traffic may not have been adequate to meet sudden surges in demand.”
    Likewise, CR augmented the capacity of various trains by attaching 3,451 coaches to them in this period. This alone helped CR earn Rs 10.2 crore and also helped provide additional berths for almost two lakh passengers.
    Apart from this, CR earned Rs 1.89 crore through booking of 124 coaches under the full tariff train (FTT) scheme. CR was able to rake in Rs 6.11 crore after running 12 FTTs in this period.
    AK Singh, public relations officer, CR, said, “In order to cater to passenger demands for trains on busy routes, we have been able to undertake permanent augmentation in 15 trains by attaching 40 coaches. Of these, 23 were non-AC coaches and 17 AC coaches because of corresponding volumes of passengers in the categories.”
    Joshi said the augmentation of train services and coaches is a tedious process. “We have to check whether additional trains can be run on the available paths and then change the time-table accordingly. Moreover, since the trains also pass through the jurisdiction of other zonal railways, it has to be ascertained whether the platforms on which the trains will halt are big enough to accommodate the augmented trains.”
RAKING IN REVENUE
